Date:  Feb. 7, 2015

Location:  Private residence, Airdre

Claims: objects being moved, hearing voices, feeling unexplained physical pressure, experiencing uncharacteristic mood swings, feeling watched, seeing shadow figures

Investigators: Holly, Christine, Shae, Paul

Background

The city of Airdre, Alberta has something of a dark history. From 1995 to 1999, 14 teenagers committed suicide. Though no public explanation was ever provided, there was heavy speculation that a cult was at work. We found no proof to support this, but we remain open-minded to the possibility, as each suicide was found to be connected to a song by the Goo-Goo Dolls, called “Iris”.

The location being investigated is a recently-renovated 1970’s detached home with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a large patio attached to the kitchen, and a large, detached garage. Two adults and two children – a girl, 9, and a boy, 13 – currently rent the home. The primary renter has a bedroom in the basement; the secondary renter – and parent of the two children – has a bedroom on the main floor, as does the girl. The boy has the entire recreation area in the basement as his bedroom and living space. There are also 2 large dogs.

During our preliminary interview, the secondary renter revealed that the ashes of a deceased relative are kept on a high cupboard in the kitchen area. According to them, the deceased relative was not a nice person in life. Both clients also told us that they each have been coping with a great deal of stressful change, and that they only moved into the home at the end of December, 2014. When asked about when the activity began, they told us it started approximately two weeks after they moved in. They also revealed to us that in September, 2014, their next-door neighbor committed suicide. We did some research on this, and we were able to verify that this event did occur.

With parental consent, we interviewed the children. According to the girl, pictures on her dresser get turned over, the bottom drawer on her bedside table has been repeatedly pulled open, and one of her dolls has often been moved. The girl says these incidents have occurred when no one is home.

The boy claims to have seen the shadow of a very large head on the outside of the furnace-room door. He says this only occurred once, but generally, he often feels uneasy and watched, and he can’t sleep without having a light on. We attempted to replicate a shadow crossing the door, but our efforts were unsuccessful.

We also conducted a full EMF sweep, beginning with the main floor and ending in the basement. Except for the furnace, which had an EMF output exceeding 25 mg, all readings were within normal ranges, including those on the appliances, outlets, light fixtures, and electronics.

Personal Experiences

During the preliminary visit, both Holly and Christine experienced sensations of being watched, an unusual heaviness, and general uneasiness in all areas of the home. Christine said that while she was making her way to the basement to conduct the EMF sweep, she heard a disembodied male voice. She said that although she could not identify what was said, the voice itself was quite loud. There were no males in the home at the time this occurred, nor was anyone – male or female – outside.

When the interview was finished and they were in the car, both Holly and Christine experienced a strong sensation that they were not alone in the vehicle. This sensation remained throughout the duration of the trip back to Holly’s home. After Christine left and Holly was gathering up equipment from the car, Holly discovered her equipment bag was missing. She realized it had been left at the home of the client. Holly called the client to request permission to come back and pick it up. The client consented. When Holly left the client’s home again, the earlier sensation of being followed was no longer present.

Investigation #1

On Feb. 7, 2015, Holly, Christine, and Paul conducted the first of what would be two investigations. When we arrived, we found the clients had a male friend visiting from out of town. The primary client told us he had been staying with them for approximately one week. To our dismay, the man appeared to be quite intoxicated, and verbally combative and aggressive about what he referred to as “the ghost”.  He repeatedly taunted and provoked “the ghost” despite our requests not to do that.  We also asked him to please try to be quiet while we worked, so that noise contamination would be minimized.

This was not an ideal situation in which to conduct an investigation. Had this location been local, arrangements would have been made with the client to return when their friend had either returned to his own home, or he was in a calmer state. However, the location is almost an hour out of town, so after discussing the matter, the team made the decision to go ahead with the investigation and hope for the best. The clients tried very hard to comply with our request for quiet when Christine went downstairs to begin the investigation. Holly and Paul remained upstairs with the clients to help them with their visiting friend.

Christine investigated the recreation area first.  There were fluctuations on the EMF meter, but this was eventually found to occur as a result of the furnace coming on and then, shutting off. No unusual physical or vocal anomalies were captured on either audio or video.

The session lasted approximately 15 minutes.  Holly and Paul then went downstairs to investigate while Christine stayed upstairs with the clients.

During their investigation of the recreation area, both Holly and Paul began experiencing sensations of intense physical pressure on their heads and necks, as well as an increasing sense of negative energy in the form of anger they could not explain or counter. They also experienced a sudden hypersensitivity to sound – possibly resulting from the intensifying headaches they were struggling to cope with – and they became short-tempered almost to the point of fighting with each other. At this point, they both heard the client’s male friend provoking and taunting what he referred to as “the ghost” and saying he wasn’t afraid of it or anything else. They also heard Christine and the clients trying – unsuccessfully – to deal with the situation and to get the man to quiet down.

Due to this, as well as to the intensity of the physical pressure they were experiencing, Holly and Paul decided to end the EVP session in the basement and rejoin the group upstairs, in the kitchen.

The team worked to deal with the situation with the primary client’s friend for approximately 15 minutes later, after which time the man was calmer and decided to go to bed. At that time, we decided to take a break outside and discuss the situation and what our next course of action should be. It was decided that we would conduct a ghost-box session in the kitchen, with the client, and then wrap the investigation.

The client was open to the use of the ghost box. The session lasted approximately 15 minutes. During the session, we received some interesting potential responses. When the session was completed, we all felt that a return investigation was required, and that Shae, our Occult Specialist, needed to attend. We discussed this with the client and booked the return investigation for the following week.

Investigation #2

Attending investigators: Holly, Christine, Shae, Paul

When we arrived at the client’s home, Holly and Christine noticed a tangible difference in the home’s atmosphere. Where it had been intense, uncomfortable, heavy, and oppressive on the first visit, this time, we felt an unusual and inexplicable sense of silence punctuated by a sense of being observed.

Unlike the first investigation, all four investigators stayed together throughout this second investigation.  As the investigation progressed, the sense of observation and silence persisted. Shae stated that he was picking up on the presence of a male energy, and it was hiding from him. He added that this usually happens when he enters a location. Holly, Christine, and Paul noted that they were not experiencing the physical sensations they had experienced during the first investigation.

The investigators spent approximately two and a half hours in the home before making the decision to wrap the investigation and then speak with the client. No vocal, sound, or visual anomalies were captured.

Conclusion

After analyzing the data and taking into account the discussions we had with the client, the conclusion we have reached about this situation is that some of the activity can be attributed to the children. It is well-documented that spirit energy is attracted to children who are sensitive and/or who are going through puberty. Since this is the case with the children living in the home, suggestions were offered to the client about ways to address those events when they occur.

While we do feel the activity is related to living humans, we do not believe this is a poltergeist situation.  The standard characteristics of a poltergeist were not present, either in the claims being made, or during both of the investigations.  We cannot explain the physical experiences we had during the first investigation, nor can we explain why those events did not occur at the second investigation. But we can say with certainty that whoever may be visiting the home is not harmful.

After reviewing all the data from both investigations, and taking into account the personal information the client shared with us, we are deeming the location as not haunted and closing the file. However, we have reassured the client that if the activity either resumes or intensifies, we will be there to help them.

We extend our thanks and appreciation to our clients for inviting us into their home, and for trying to help us help them.  We wish them well and hope they are able to go forward in peace.
